When swapping ingredients isn’t worth it in Weight Watchers

Today I tried to make my favorite chocolate cake recipe by swapping ingredients to take points off for Weight Watchers.  It was an utter failure.

I have been making this cake for over a year now, and I am sorry I tried to swap out the oil for apple sauce and the sugar for maple syrup.  The texture is terrible, and it doesn’t taste very good.

Sometimes when we are trying to be healthy, we want to mess with certain recipes in order to achieve our goals.  Desserts cost a lot of points on Weight Watchers.

I went back to the recipe builder and put back in the oil and sugar, and even though the portion size is smaller (16 pieces instead of 12) it’s the same 6 points.  I can live with a smaller portion in exchange for a cake that doesn’t taste like crap.

Here’s what my disaster looks like:

And here’s the original when the recipe is followed:

You can see in the pictures that not only is the color off, but the moist crumb is missing, as is the ganache.  Using the ganache adds too many points.

Oh well, maybe after I lose ten pounds I will reward myself, ganache and all.  Lesson learned.

Perhaps you tried switching too many things at once. I have used applesauce in place of oil/butter in cake/pastry recipes and had them turn out wonderfully. I have a vague memory of once trying to replace the sugar with a more liquid alternative; if I’m remembering correctly, that was a disaster. But I have been able to cut back the amount of sugar (no more than half) and get good results.

No doubt doing both swaps led to failure. I have used applesauce also and cut back on the sugar. At this point cake costs me too many WW points so I am leaving off of it for now.

Oh, that’s a hard self-discipline to do, but the strength is there when you want something more than cake!
