About four months ago, I noticed that the right side of my face was swelling up. At first, because my ear felt clogged, I thought it was an ear infection. I went to the doctor who told me it was not infected, but probably the eustachian tube, and told me to get Flonase.
About a month later, I went to the dentist, thinking that it was an abscess. There was a lone tooth root leftover from having my teeth extracted, but he wasn’t sure that was it. He put me on antibiotics, which helped somewhat, but not really. I came back from my vacation to Hawaii with the same swelling. We decided to try to get rid of the root. After healing from the oral surgery on the calcified root, my face was still swollen.
I began to wonder what was going on. Searching google, I came up with all kinds of horrible possibilities. Then I started reading about soy and how an allergy can cause facial swelling. It’s not usual, but it is possible. I also had occasional diarrhea and bloating, even with the gluten and dairy elimination.
Hmmm, I thought, let me try cutting it out for awhile. I had been drinking chocolate soy milk, eating soy yogurt and eating soy cheese and cream cheese. I stopped eating and drinking all soy products.
My facial swelling has come down quite a bit. I still have a small lump along the jawline and I have an appointment with an oral surgeon just to make sure. My ear is less clogged also. Although I wasn’t sure until today that my stomach issues were due to the soy.
I ordered a box of cinnamon cookies from an online gluten free website which I had never seen before. They contain soybean oil, soy flour and soy lecithin, which I guess I didn’t think about at the time I ordered them. I ate two today and boy, my gut rebelled!
So I say, yo, soy! I am cutting you out of my life for good!
