I can haz Cheezburger..

Not just cheeseburgers……

Since going gluten and dairy free, the hardest thing for me to give up has been dairy.  I don’t really miss milk since I started drinking Silk coconut almond blend.  But I do miss cream cheese and sour cream.  What is a bagel without cream cheese?  What are nachos without sour cream?  I have found the gluten free versions of bagels, and can make the dairy free cheese version of nachos, but they seem undressed somehow.

Recently, both Walmart and Shoprite have started carrying Tofutti dairy free cream cheese and sour cream.  I have been hoping for this for a long time.  Of course, now that I am moving to Tennessee in a couple of months, the search will have to begin again.  I am not sure Walmart will carry these down there.  I may have to visit the local health food store, but it will be worth it.  The cream cheese is fabulous.  Spread on a gluten free bagel, with orange marmalade-yum!  Haven’t tried the sour cream yet but hoping it is just as good.

Another food I crave is Chinese food.  I am a dumpling fiend-can eat eight at one sitting.  I have looked for gluten free recipes but it’s a lot of work to make the dumplings.  I tried rice wrappers-yuck!   So imagine my amazement when I found gluten and dairy free dumplings in the gluten free freezer section of Shoprite.

The dumplings are delicious.  They are very garlicky, so if you have issues with garlic watch out.  The dough is  a bit thin and tears easily.  I also tweaked the cooking directions-I think half a cup of water is too much, and the dumplings don’t need more than about 3 or 4 minutes to cook.  Then fry in a tablespoon of oil.  They also make fried rice and General Tso’s chicken.

I am happy to see new products coming out all the time.  Most are good.  I figure on taking all the shortcuts I can.  These food are not healthy-not by a long shot.  But neither is Chinese food, sour cream or cream cheese.  Or bread.  The list goes on and on.

If you have found a great substitute for a gluten or dairy free food, I would love to hear about it!

Happy hunting!
